Children's Cut-Outs & Play Trays
A number of puzzles cut from thick plywood aimed at children aged from 6 to 8 years or 4 to 8 years. They are divided into two types - Cut-Outs and Play Trays.
Cut-Outs contain c.100 large interlocking pieces surrounding a further 12 in the shapes of various animals. These can be removed and stood up independently of the puzzle. Two titles are known, namely "Jungle" and "Farmyard". The two jigsaws were listed in the 1937 Victory Catalogue with codes GZ1 & GK1, sized 100pc 24x13in, priced 7s6d. The illustration shows the box to be divided into two sections, one for each type of piece.
A smaller Cut-Outs size (AZ1 & AK1) was part of a 4-title range which also included AD1 (The Dogs) and AX1 (The Soldiers), measuring 14.8x9in, with 12 or 10 cut-outs, priced 3s6d. These also had divided boxes.
The four titles were also made as Play Trays in 1937, coded TZ7, TK7, TD7 & TX7. These jigsaws came flat-packed in shallow trays.
The 1952 Catalogue had the two extra-large 24x13in Cut-Out titles, plus the 4 title range at two smaller sizes: A and B, which measured 7.8x4.3in. In the B size the figures were attached to a card.
A further Cut-Out title had been released, The Circus, with two sizes CIR1 10x6.5in, CIR2 14.8x9.8in.
The four Play Tray titles were also in the 1952 Catalogue.
They were continuing to be made during the 1960's and early 1970's, after the Victory operation was purchased by J.W. Spear.
