On a Lee Shore

35 piece, non-interlocking cardboard jigsaw puzzle, estimated to be of c1920 manufacture, cut in a similar style to that of the "Tippe Toppe" range of London manufacturer Raphael Tuck & Sons, who perhaps manufactured these.

The puzzle is housed in a sturdy red box with lift-off lid and this particular example, which features a painting by the British maritime artist Bernard Gribble, also contained two unused RNLI postcards, both painted by him as well. One features this same artwork and was printed by The Whitefriars Press, Ltd., London and Tonbridge. This is known to date from c1920. The other, which is thought to be slightly later, is entitled "Return of the Life-Boat" and was printed by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd.

The first postcard describes the scene and promotes the RNLI as being "The Red Cross of the Sea" and references the saving of over 57,000 lives since 1824. The second records this as being over 58,000 lives, going on to say that "The Life-Boats are provided and maintained, rescuers rewarded, and pensions paid by the FREE GIFTS of the BRITISH PEOPLE."
