The Hunt (Diana & Her Nymphs)
A late jigsaw commissioned by Nicki, which Rob also cut for Jackie. This jigsaw has a wavy or deckled edge and is line-cut in a push-fit style with few and only shallow knobs - a style which Rob liked less than interlocking jigsaws. Nicki’s verdict:
”Rob is a master of colour-line cutting but he had a field day with this, making it one of those glorious puzzles that sit of the table for weeks and every time you pass it there is elation if just one piece finds a home. Colour is no help at all as whatever the next-door piece is, it will definitely not be the same colour. It is supposed to be semi-interlocking with a wavy border, but it is more push-fit and falls apart at the slightest knock. Luckily Rob’s pieces fit tightly and perfectly otherwise confidence would be low on how a bright blue piece can sit next to a rusty red one (and turning the pieces over to check the grain is no help either as Rob has varnished the back). Even so there are a few pieces that fit perfectly in the wrong place, and they threw me for ages. I think it took me 2 weeks to finally crack it …”
Robert Burns was an artist & designer – not the famous poet! It was created as part of the ambitious first floor decoration for Crawford's Tea Rooms at 70 Princes Street, Edinburgh, where Burns was responsible for every detail of the interior design, from the murals to the cake-stands. This striking large painting is now in the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh.
Liberty Puzzles have a laser-cut version of the design which transforms into a stag’s head, and other hand-cutters have also cut the design.
